China News Service, May 17. According to Hong Kong Sing Tao.com, the third runway project of Hong Kong International Airport successfully completed the flight check last month and is expected to be opened as scheduled this year.

The Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AA) submitted a document to the Legislative Council of the SAR Government, in which it plans to conduct an aircraft accident rescue exercise this month, and expects to obtain a license to operate the third runway and related taxiways by the end of the month.

When the third runway is opened, the middle runway will be closed for about two years for reconfiguration.

The three-run project involves the reclamation of about 650 hectares of land, the construction of a new passenger terminal, the expansion of the existing No. 2 terminal, and the construction of a new runway with a total length of 3.8 kilometers and a width of 60 meters. The project started in August 2016.

In addition, the AA believes that the aviation industry and air traffic will gradually recover as the epidemic subsides; the industry generally expects that passenger traffic will gradually return to pre-epidemic levels within three years.
