The proposal gives employees with severe menstrual pain the opportunity to take at least three days off each month against a medical certificate.

The measure is part of a package on reproductive health, which also includes requirements for abolished VAT for sanitary napkins and tampons, as well as a change in the law that allows 16- and 17-year-olds to have an abortion without parental consent.

If the proposal is also approved by Parliament, Spain will be the first country in Europe to offer paid absence for menstrual pain.

- The days of pain at work are over, says the country's Minister for Gender Equality Irene Montero.
