Sweden's foreign minister signs an application to join NATO

Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde signed her country's request to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

"Our NATO request is now officially signed," Lindy tweeted.

She added that the request would be forwarded to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, as soon as Finland signed a similar request.

The two countries decided, after their decision to apply for membership in the Western military alliance in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to submit their applications jointly.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and his government have already made a decision on the application to join.

However, the request is still awaiting a parliamentary vote, on Tuesday.

The Swedish government made the final decision on Monday on the request to join NATO.

"It's a huge feeling, a dangerous feeling, a feeling like we've come to what we think is the best for Sweden ever," Lindy said.
