Afghanistan..a sharp increase in female murder and suicide cases

Afghanistan has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of honor killings and female suicides over the past few days.

Reports of violence against women were common in the past but although the Taliban have silenced and suppressed the media since their return to power last year, there has been an increase in the recent period.

During the past three days, local officials confirmed that 4 women were killed and two committed suicide.

The incidents occurred in Faryab, Ghazni, Samanjan and Bamiyan provinces.

Shamsullah Mohammadi, head of the Information and Culture Department in Faryab province, told the German News Agency (dpa) that a man shot dead his wife's sister on allegations that she had "illegal relations" and then ran away, adding that a young woman in the same province committed suicide for unknown reasons.

In Ghazni, a man shot dead a mother and injured her daughter after learning that the girl had been engaged to someone else. In a separate incident in Ghazni, a young woman was killed by her brother and cousin after being accused of having sexual relations outside of marriage.

Her boyfriend was also killed.

State Police spokesman Syed Ishaq Salih confirmed the two murders, adding that the perpetrators involved in the second case had been arrested.

Afghan media also reported that a woman died in hospital after her husband smashed her head with a stone in Samangan province.

Another young woman committed suicide in the Waras district of Bamiyan.
