• Since the health crisis and the drop in church attendance, donations have been fewer in the diocese of Toulouse.

  • To cope with this drop in resources, caused by donations to other causes or the impact of the report on sexual abuse in the church, the diocese is launching a new campaign from the denier of the cult.

  • The budget of 11 million euros of the diocese is used in particular to finance the salary of the 142 priests but also the construction of a new church in Toulouse in the rapidly developing district of Borderouge.

After two years of health crisis, the faithful have not yet all found their way to the Toulouse churches.

A drop in parish attendance which has a direct impact on donations made to the diocese of the Pink City.

“Since the beginning of the year, there is also the context of the economic crisis and as in any crisis there are fears, generosity arrives a little less quickly.

The average donation has dropped, people also donate elsewhere, especially to Ukrainians,” notes Arnaud Chabert, the diocesan bursar.

Not to mention the impact of the report of the independent commission on sexual abuse in the church which turned away some benefactors.

However, the expenses of the Catholic Church continue to run, whether in the treatment of the 142 active priests or the salaries of the 77 employees of the diocese.

Not to mention building maintenance or, for the first time in decades, the construction of a new church in Toulouse, in the booming Borderouge district.

New Resource Tracks

Each year, 11 million euros are thus necessary to balance the budget of the diocese of Toulouse.

Financed thanks to the collection or legacies, which represent an average of 900,000 euros each year, it is however very dependent on the denier of the cult which it feeds at 38%.

But at the end of March, only 14% of the sum necessary for the proper functioning of the diocese had been collected.

“We are finding savings internally by better managing our contracts.

We also rent rooms in less used places to have additional income, ”continues Arnaud Chabert who recalls that the diocese receives no subsidy, no more from the State than from the Vatican.

While the classic campaign periods of the last of the cult take place during Lent or Advent, the diocese of Toulouse has decided to call on its faithful again.

"It's not just a message to say" help us "to meet the expenses, there is also joy in making a donation and sharing", insists the diocesan bursar who recalls that this contributes to the welcoming refugees or helping people on the street.
