The Union wants Gerhard Schröder to cut all pension benefits and staff positions because of his contacts with Russia in connection with the Ukraine war.

The 78-year-old former chancellor should only keep his personal protection.

The CDU and CSU want to submit corresponding applications to the budget committee this week, as their budgetary spokesman Christian Haase announced on Tuesday.

In order to decide this, the Union would depend on the votes of the traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP.

The SPD had also distanced itself from Schröder and asked him to give up all his posts at the Russian energy companies Nord Stream and Rosneft.

The SPD leadership did not draw any conclusions for the time being.

"Former Chancellor Schröder has forfeited every claim with his behavior or non-behaviour towards Russian President Vladimir Putin," said the CDU politician Haase.

"He cannot serve two states or be supported by two states." Schröder has had several opportunities to speak out against Putin and his war of aggression.

"Again and again, no return.

It is therefore only logical to delete the official equipment.”

The Union's motions for the meeting of the budget committee on Wednesday and for the so-called adjustment session on the federal budget 2022 on Thursday provide that Schröder's budget for pension services and travel expenses will be canceled in addition to five staff positions.

Schröder was Chancellor of a red-green federal government from 1998 to 2005.
