US Representative Ilhan Omar said that there is much that the US government can do to follow up on the case of the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh, calling for sending American investigators.

And Ilhan Omar added - in an interview with Al Jazeera - that "the United States, through lawmakers, should hold its opponents and allies to account as well."

She continued, "We must remind people that Shireen was an American citizen, and therefore we are talking about an American journalist who was killed in a foreign land, and therefore it is important for the American government to intervene and request an investigation to hold those who killed her accountable."

Ilhan Omar also called on the US administration to open an independent investigation and to send investigators from the United States.

"There are a lot of things that we can and should do, the first of which is to ask for an independent investigation, to send investigators from the United States, to have high-level dialogues," she said.

Calls are still coming in from Western and Arab governments, human rights organizations and members of parliaments around the world to conduct an investigation into the assassination of our colleague Shireen Abu Aqleh, who was killed by Israeli occupation soldiers while she was covering the storming of Jenin last Wednesday.
