- We will inform NATO that we want to become a member of the alliance, said Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson (S) at a press conference on Monday.

She stated that there is now a broad majority in Sweden's Riksdag for Sweden to join NATO.

On Monday morning, the issue was debated in the Riksdag.

Want to apply with Finland

The application will be submitted by the Swedish NATO Ambassador.

Exactly when this will happen, the Prime Minister did not give a clear message, but they want to send in their application together with Finland.

On Sunday, the Finnish government decided to apply for membership in NATO.

- When Finland has now also announced that it intends to apply for NATO membership, Sweden alone would remain outside NATO in a very vulnerable position.

The best thing for Sweden's security and the security of the Swedish people is that we join NATO and that we do it together with Finland.

Can not rule out countermeasures

The government also has today the decision on a bill that makes it possible for Sweden to receive military support from all EU countries and all NATO countries, Magdalena Andersson further stated.

- Sweden will be in a vulnerable position during the time that our application is being processed.

Russia has announced that it will take countermeasures if we join NATO.

We can not rule out that Sweden is exposed to, for example, misinformation and attempts to intimidate and divide us.

Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson also participated in the press conference.

- This is a historic decision, he says and continues.

It is not about party politics without taking joint responsibility for the country's security policy interest.
