He noted that for four months the country did not make payments to suppliers of medicines, medical equipment and food for patients.

The payment due to them is 34 billion rupees.

Wickramasinghe pointed out that the relevant services are now unable to provide even "the two most important items of the 14 essential medicines that we currently need."

These two drugs are used to treat heart disease and for the rabies vaccine.

Earlier, Wickramasinghe, in his address to the nation, said that there was only one day of gasoline left in the country.
