“I will submit a bill to the National Assembly this morning to ban the wearing of the burkini to enshrine it in the law”, announced Eric Ciotti at the microphone of France Bleu Azur this Monday morning.

The outgoing deputy of the 1st district of the Alpes-Maritimes wants to put an end to the debate, in particular in Grenoble where the municipal council could modify the regulations of its swimming pools in order to authorize bathing there in a burkini.

He believes that the law is not clear and that it is a “consequence of the cowardice of the government”.

For Éric Ciotti, the burkini is “the opposite of freedom”

For the elected official, the burkini is "quite the opposite of freedom" and this approach is "extraordinarily dangerous", he spoke on the local radio.

He recalled that during his mandate, he had already made several amendments on the question of wearing the veil.

If the deliberation on the burkini is adopted, the prefect of Isère announced Sunday that he would oppose it, in accordance with the instructions he received from the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

Rennes is the only city where the full swimsuit has been authorized in swimming pools since 2018.
