The announcement was made by President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin at a press conference in Helsinki on Sunday.

Niinistö says that the decision will secure Finland's security policy and maximize the country's security, "it does not disadvantage anyone".

- During these times, we have always had a close discussion with Sweden.

It has previously been said that Finland's cause is ours, but it can now be said that Sweden's cause is ours, says Niinistö.

Now the government is hoping for a speedy approval by the other member states.

- The feeling I mainly feel today is relief, but now we must already look forward to the ratification process.

says Marin to SVT News.

"The whole field should be included"

Sanna Marin also hopes that the Riksdag will approve the committee's proposal in Monday's vote.

The government does not need the support of the Riksdag in this matter, but both Niinistö and Marin emphasize the importance of all parties having a say.

- The decision is historic.

It is important that the decision has parliamentary support.

It has been obvious to me that the whole field has been involved, says the president.

Conversation with Erdogan

Finland's application for NATO membership must now be approved unanimously by NATO member countries.

Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said it would be a "mistake" to allow Sweden and Finland to join the military alliance.

When asked about the outcome, Niinistö answers that he feels confused - when he spoke to Erdogan on the phone a month ago, it sounded different:

- He said that you will apply and we will approve it.

I thanked him, says Niinistö and adds:

- I will talk to him again about the problems he raised.
