According to the Colombo Gazette, citing State Department spokesman Ned Price, the United States is concerned about the situation in Sri Lanka.

“We are closely monitoring the deployment of military personnel - this is something that causes us concern.

We are also closely monitoring the development of the political environment since the resignation of the Prime Minister,” Price said.

He also noted that the American side condemns violence against peaceful protesters.

“We call for the investigation, arrest and punishment of those involved in acts of violence,” he said.

Earlier, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa sent a letter of resignation to President Gotbay Rajapaksa amid the economic crisis and protests in the country.

On May 9, it was reported that at least 141 people sought medical attention at the Colombo National Hospital after clashes began in several areas of the Sri Lankan capital.
