• Courts The judge releases the driver without a license and drunk who fatally ran over two septuagenarians in Sanchinarro

Nieves, 79, and Mariluz, 72, were close friends.

Every afternoon

they went out for a long walk through the large green areas and avenues of the Sanchinarro neighborhood

, in the north of the Spanish capital.

Both lived in the Virgen del Cortijo area and belonged to their Neighborhood Association.

Last Sunday they began the march of more than two hours.

It was 6:30 p.m.

But when they were waiting to cross in the pedestrian median of Avenida del Ingeniero Emilio Herrera,

a powerful BMW left the road and ran over them

.

Both died on the spot.

One of them was displaced more than 20 meters.

The vehicle that ran over them was driven by a 30-year-old woman who

lacked a driver's license and who almost doubled the allowed alcohol rate.

She was arrested by the Municipal Police accused of reckless homicide and a crime against traffic safety.

After the first test carried out by the agents in which she tested positive for breathalyzer, she could not undergo the contrast test because she was taken to the hospital due to a nervous breakdown.

Likewise, the Municipal Police arrested her partner, a 42-year-old man, who was in the passenger seat during the accident, for allowing the driver to circulate knowing that she did not have a license and was drunk.

They were going at great speed and they were coming from a meal.

In the back seat was the man's 12-year-old son.

None of the three was injured.

The couple was released on charges after testifying before the judge.

The prosecutor came to unsuccessfully request the entry into prison of

the driver who wanted to exchange places behind the wheel with her partner after the coup,

according to several witnesses.

Mariluz lived opposite the place where she met her death.

Nieves, on Oña street.

Both were widows and well known in the area because they participated in many of the activities of the Virgen del Cortijo Neighborhood Association, of which they had been a part for many years.

«Mariluz, with two children and grandchildren, lost her husband four years ago and Nieves, with a daughter, was widowed last year.

The two were inseparable and were always together

.

They were an example for all of us because of their energy and their desire to live, ”explained a friend from the neighborhood.

In addition to walking for two or three hours every day, they were also very assiduous at the neighborhood petanque court, dance classes and excursions to Madrid.

“They both loved to play petanque.

Now that the good weather was coming, it was when they most enjoyed the countryside that we have close to home, ”said another of the close friends.

Many of the women who make up the association went yesterday to the La Paz Funeral Home in Tres Cantos.

"If we had had time we would have made them two bouquets as they deserve," says another of the friends.

«

It was a very hard blow.

Both were always ready for anything

and collaborated in multiple activities," explained another woman, who added: "It could have been worse, since sometimes up to four or five friends would get together to walk in a group."

Nieves had lived in Sanchinarro for more than 40 years and had always been very committed to the social problems of the neighborhood, according to her friends.

A few days ago, the woman complained to the association about the lack of respect that cars had for pedestrians.

She commented that any day a tragedy could happen.

"

They always go very fast at that roundabout,

the other day they insulted us when crossing slowly," said one of the relatives of the deceased.

The friends and colleagues of the association hope that the name of Nieves and Mariluz will never be forgotten in the Sanchinarro neighbourhood.

They will fight to ask to be remembered in some special way.

"We'll see what can be done. At least,

in the neighborhood association we will never forget them

," they say in the entity.
