The greatest increase in the number of victims of gender-based violence in 2021 has been among those under 18 years of age.

Those affected grew 28.6% more in this age group than in 2020, according to data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics).

This figure has increased at the same time as the number of male aggressors.

The number of people reported for gender-based violence has grown over the last year in the youngest population group in society, among those under 19 years of age (70.8%), which reflects that gender-based violence now begins at ages earlier.

The rest of the data indicates that nearly half of the victims were between 30 and 44 years old (47.5%) and that the average age of the women was between 37 and 40 years old.

Of those women who had precautionary measures or protection orders, 30,141 were affected by this type of violence, 3.2% compared to the previous year.

The autonomous communities that have had the greatest annual increase in gender-based violence in relative terms have been La Rioja (2.5%) and the Region of Murcia and Ceuta, both with 2.3%.

On the contrary, the Basque Country (0.6%) and Catalonia (0.8%) presented the lowest rate of gender violence.

Criminal offenses and precautionary measures

In 2021, 36,362 criminal offenses were recorded on matters of gender violence, a number that has increased by nearly 6% compared to 2020. Of the most frequent offenses, half had to do with injuries to the other person ( 49.1%), with physical and psychological abuse (21.2%) and with threats (15.5%).

On the other hand, the criminal precautionary measures that occurred the most were the prohibition of approaching certain people (37%), avoiding establishing communication with certain individuals (36.4%) and provisional release (13.4%).

And of the most frequent civil precautionary measures during the last year, the payment of alimony (27%), the determination of the custody regime (26.3%) and the visitation regime (19.2%) stand out.

Denounced for gender violence

The greatest increase in those reported for gender violence occurred in adolescent males (70.8%) and among young people between 18 and 19 years old (15.7%), an increase that coincides with the rise in the number of women victims of this type of violence.

A total of 30,047 men were sued for gender-based violence with a protection order or precautionary measures throughout 2021, which represents 3.1% more than the previous year.

Almost half of those reported (48.2%) were concentrated in middle age, between 30 and 44 years, while the average age of those reported was close to 40 years.

In addition, the highest rate of reported men was reached in the groups of 30 to 34 years.
