More than 8 million people were internally displaced in Ukraine as of May 3, more than two months after Russia invaded the country, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday. .

In total, the IOM estimates that 13.686 million people were forced to flee their places of residence because of the attack ordered by Vladimir Putin on February 24, of which 8.029 million have moved elsewhere in Ukraine, the rest having fled the country.

At the last census, the IOM counted 7.7 million internally displaced people.

Need financial help

"The needs of these internally displaced people and all those affected by the war in Ukraine are increasing hour by hour", warned the organisation's director general, António Vitorino, stressing that "access to populations in need is difficult while hostilities continue.

These displaced persons say above all that they need financial assistance.

“Two-thirds of respondents put the need for cash on their list of needs, compared to 49% at the start of the war,” notes the IOM.

More than 70% of respondents say they would use this financial assistance to buy food and/or medicine.

Damaged slots

Another pressing need is accommodation.

Of the IDPs alone, 27% report that their accommodation has been damaged.

One in 10 people interviewed by IOM – whether displaced or not – said they would need equipment to fix it.

In addition, the UN organization also notes that more than 2.7 million people have chosen to return to their homes.

The overwhelming majority (93%) had fled elsewhere in the country.

The survey was conducted among 2,000 anonymous people by telephone between April 29 and May 3.
