Two 25-year-old men appeared on Monday before the court in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).

They were accused of having printed and circulated counterfeit 20 euro notes for a total amount estimated by the police at 2,000 euros.

The court sentenced the first respondent to eight months in prison.

He was in a state of recidivism after two other counterfeit money cases.

The banknotes had been discovered in circulation at the end of 2021. A search of the home of one of the two defendants had revealed the presence of a printer, falling banknotes and a strip of silver paper.

The occupant of the accommodation had claimed that the counterfeit money had only been made to buy drugs.

His lawyer spoke of his “pure and simple amateurism”.

The other individual claimed to have given advice but not to have participated in the printing.
