One person was killed and 13 injured when a train derailed south of Vienna on Monday, the Austrian APA news agency reported.

Paramedics rushed to the site of the accident in Mönchendorf, where one person was killed, two seriously injured and 11 lightly injured, Andreas Zenker of the Red Cross in Lower Austria was quoted by APA.

"Dangerous train accident in Münchendorf," Lower Austria Civil Defense wrote on Facebook.

"According to preliminary information, there are many casualties, several ambulances and a large team of rescue personnel have been sent at the present time," he added.

APA reported that one of the cars overturned when the train derailed, and the cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Fatal train accidents are rare in Austria, a member of the European Union, which has a population of nine million.
