China's vegetation ecological quality index hits a new high since 2000

This newspaper, Beijing, May 8 (Reporter Li Hongmei) The China Meteorological Administration recently released the "2021 National Ecological Meteorological Bulletin" showing that in 2021, the vegetation ecological quality index will be the highest since 2000, and the grassland yield will be the highest since 2000. Most of the surface ecology in the northern desertification area continued to improve, and the vegetation ecological quality in the southwestern rocky desertification area was the highest since 2000.

The monitoring results show that the vegetation ecological quality index in 2021 will be 68.8, an increase of 7.7% compared with normal years (the average value from 2000 to 2020).

Compared with 2020, the vegetation ecological quality index in 2021 will increase by 0.4%, of which the vegetation coverage will increase by 0.6 percentage points, and the net primary productivity of vegetation will increase by 0.7 g carbon per square meter.

The meteorological impact assessment on major ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, farmland, and deserts shows that the ecological quality will reach a high level in 2021.

The assessment shows that from 2000 to 2021, the water and heat conditions in Northeast China will be better, and the service functions of forests and key wetlands will be improved; From 2000 to 2021, the precipitation tends to increase, and the ecological quality of vegetation is gradually improving; from 2000 to 2021, the water and heat conditions in the Wuyi Mountains are favorable for vegetation growth, and the water conservation function is improved.

"This shows that the ecological quality of vegetation in my country is getting better and better," said Qian Shuan, senior engineer at the Ecology and Agricultural Meteorological Office of the National Meteorological Center. It provided important support for the increase of ecological quality index.
