The elite unit of the gendarmerie, the GIGN, carried out a lightning operation around 7:30 a.m. this Monday morning in Saint-Aulaye in the Dordogne, to arrest a man who was kidnapping his companion, reports France Bleu Périgord.

Armed and considered dangerous

A violent argument had broken out the previous evening within the couple.

The 40-year-old let his partner's children go, two teenagers aged 14 and 16 who told the gendarmes that he was armed with a knife, a chainsaw and that he was threatening to burn down the house.

The GIGN was contacted because the man is a former soldier, experienced in handling weapons for example, and therefore potentially dangerous.

The madman was neutralized in just a few minutes.

His partner is slightly injured.

He was taken into custody and the Périgueux prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation.
