The State Real Estate Agency manages more than 150 historic buildings that do not bear their own cost, from the royal tomb in Kivik to Drottningholm's castle.

But for a long time, the costs have been significantly higher than the state grants.

SVF's annual report for 2022 describes opportunities to get the economy in order, including business development and divestment.

"Film recordings and commercials"

Now the authority has made organizational changes to pull in more money, including through short-term rentals.

- It can be about commercials, that you want to make a TV series, record feature films or printed matter that is sold commercially.

Historically, we have been bad at charging, says Jan Olov Westerberg, administrative director at SFV.

Selling castles and medieval recreation rooms

Another way to reduce costs is to sell your items.

The income, however, does not go to the authority, but ends up in the treasury.

In its latest adaptation plan, 16 properties have had the assessment “sold” (see fact box).

Which buildings can be sold depends largely on their history.

The authority's task is to manage buildings that belong to the state's history, not Sweden's entire history.

What is the purpose of the measures?

- That the objects that are left are there, that they can be taken care of and cared for in a correct way.

Kronoberg Castle will fall into disrepair

SVT has previously written about Kronoberg's castle ruins outside Växjö which will close for visitors from next year.

The authority has made the assessment that it is not safe to stay in and that it will be difficult to sell.

Therefore, a third alternative remains: so-called

passive management.

That is, to keep costs down to a minimum and fall due indefinitely.
