60 people were killed..a horrific Russian bombing of a school in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Sixty people were killed Saturday in the bombing of a school in the Lugansk region of eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday.

"Yesterday, in the village of Belogorivka in the Lugansk region, a Russian bomb killed sixty civilians," Zelensky said in a video intervention during his participation in a G7 summit.

"They were looking for shelter in an ordinary school building that was targeted by a Russian air strike," he added.

For his part, the governor of the Lugansk region, Sergey Gaidai, told the Russian-language channel "Current Time" that "a bomb dropped from the air hit a school and killed 60 people under the rubble."

"Belogorivka is still going through very violent blows," he added.

For his part, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described as "horrific" the bombing of a school in eastern Ukraine, which killed 60 people, and called for the protection of civilians, his spokesman said Sunday.

"The bombing on May 7 of a school in Belogorivka, Ukraine, where many people sought refuge from the ongoing fighting, is appalling," said a statement by a spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.

"Guterres reiterates that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected in time of war."
