- Many animals like to follow watercourses and do not seem to worry about the road, says Ulrika Sundgren, project manager for E14 in Sundsvall where we stand by a stream that flows under the bridge where traffic passes at high speed on top.

It was not until the 2000s that large game passages began to be built in Sweden for new road construction.

Important for new construction

In Västernorrland, the first project where the method was used was E4 Sundsvall 2011 and then E14, which was completed recently.

- In all new and rebuilding of both major roads and railways, you always look at whether passages are needed for animals, says Annette Ekman who is an environmental specialist at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Are there any disadvantages?

- The only thing is that it costs a little more money.

We have made the bridge at E14 a little longer and now the cost is about 15 million, says Ulrika Sundgren.
