The DUP, the main unionist party that had been dominant in the local assembly of Northern Ireland until then, acknowledged on Saturday that the Republicans of Sinn Féin were on the way to winning a historic victory in the local elections.

"It certainly looks like Sinn Fein is going to emerge as the first party," Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson told Sky News, repeating that his party would refuse to join a new unity government without change in the post-Brexit status of the British province.
