On May 4, local time, Colombia's top drug lord, Deiro Antonio Ursuga, was extradited to New York, the United States, to face multiple criminal charges related to drug smuggling.
Video from the scene showed Ursuga, wearing a helmet and body armor, being transported to a military airport in Colombia, surrounded by a large number of soldiers, and then taking a small plane to New York's JFK airport.
Ursuga's expression was relaxed during the entire process of being transported, and nothing special happened during the period.
On the 5th, Colombian President Duque posted a number of pictures of Ussuga's extradition on social media, with the caption that Ussuga was a murderer of social leaders and policemen, a criminal who killed boys, girls and teenagers. He will continue to cooperate with Colombia's investigation in the United States, and once his sentence in the United States is completed, he will return to Colombia to "pay the price for his crimes."
After arriving in New York, Ursuga briefly appeared in federal court in New York City on the 5th and pleaded not guilty to charges including international participation in the manufacture and distribution of cocaine.
A court-ordered detention, he is currently being held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Facility in New York City.
Usuga, alias "Otonier", was the leader of Colombia's largest drug gang, the Gulf Family, and was arrested in October 2021 during a military operation in the northwest of the country.
Usuga was indicted in the United States in 2009.
The U.S. accuses Ursuga and the "Gulf family" of illegally shipping at least 73 tons of cocaine into the U.S. between 2003 and 2012.
