During the Cold War, there was broad support among the political parties in Sweden for freedom of alliance and neutrality policy.

But as a natural consequence of Sweden's membership of the EU, the policy of neutrality was scrapped.

However, the parties still agreed that freedom of alliance would continue to apply - and all said no to NATO membership.

- But there the cracks in the facade began to appear, says Mats Knutson, domestic policy commentator.

The first party to change lines was the then People's Party, now the Liberals, which made decisions in 1999. Since then, several parties have turned on the issue.
