The debate about Sweden's possible NATO membership is in full swing.

But what are the consequences if we choose not to join?

And what signals does it send to Russian President Vladimir Putin? 

- A possible scenario is that Russia would like to carry out a military attack that affects Sweden, says Ulla Gudmundsson, former deputy head of Sweden's NATO delegation. 

She believes that in the short term we can be drawn into a war for strategic reasons, then without being covered by NATO's defense guarantee.

But the long-term effect of being outside the defense alliance is harder to predict. 

- I can not see during my lifetime that Russia would develop into a democracy comparable to Sweden or Denmark.

But Russia should not be written off as being subjected to a tyrant forever.
