• Transilien SNCF announced that “600 agents will be recruited this year”.

Among them, 200 train and tram/train drivers as well as 150 sales representatives.

  • The carrier justifies this volume of hiring by “ambitions of constant improvement of services to travelers”.

  • For the SUD-Rail union, this need for personnel is explained on the contrary by a high turnover in these professions and a lesser attractiveness, in particular because of the end of the status of railway worker.

In 2022, Transilien hires by whole carloads.

In all, "600 agents will be recruited this year by SNCF Voyageurs at Transilien SNCF", indicates the company's press release.

In detail, we are looking for “200 train and tram-train drivers, 150 station sales representatives, 150 train maintenance technicians and train shunting agents, 40 production agents and 60 frames”.

And if some positions require a CAP/BEP or Bac + 2 level, others do not require any particular diploma.

For Transilien SNCF, this volume of hiring is explained by "ambitions for constant improvement of passenger services".

Concretely, in its 2020-2023 contract with Ile-de-France Mobilités, Transilien is judged on two main indicators, punctuality and quality and the service offer.

It must therefore ensure that it has enough staff to meet these indicators.

In a more cyclical way, new agents are required for "the preparation of the commissioning of EOLE, the extension to the west of the RER E line", indicates Transilien.

This is also the case for the renewal of rolling stock “requiring strong technical skills needs” and the “implementation of the new Transilien SNCF service offer in Ile-de-France stations”.

Close counters to better hire

However, this new service offer, which aroused intense union mobilization at the beginning of the year, provides for the closure of many counters in Ile-de-France, 133 according to the SUD-Rail union.

And on the other side, are we hiring 150 sales staff at the station?

“It is not at all contradictory, assures Transilien.

Agents whose counters are removed will join mobile teams but will do the same work.

And we need new agents to improve the service.

»

Obviously, on the union side, it's not the same song.

According to SUD-Rail, the reorganization of services in stations should lead to the elimination of 338 positions, figures denied by Transilien.

For Fabien Villedieu, train driver and SUD-Rail representative on the board of directors of the SNCF, these hirings are explained because despite the job cuts, "there is a lack of people".

"The normal mode of operation among salespeople is with 100 to 200 unfilled positions that Transilien is trying to fill with its reorganization", argues the trade unionist.

He also denounces “many turnovers and resignations” following the new service offer.

On the other hand, Fabien Villedieu believes that the volume of hiring of drivers and technicians is linked to the disappearance of status for new entrants.

“Status and retirement at 50 was the carrot that kept us going despite the staggered hours and working during the holidays, he believes.

It was an attraction and loyalty lever that no longer exists.

And today it is difficult to recruit and there are many more resignations that need to be replaced.

He is also worried about the consequences of this turnover.

“If a driver who is trained and paid by the SNCF for a year, resigns after two or three years, it is an economic disaster.

»

Transilien SNCF is much less alarmist.

"The end of recruitment to the status does not seem to have affected the attractiveness of professions within the SNCF, which continues to generate regular flows of applications", he assures.

He boasts “a package (remuneration/benefits) which remains attractive”.

For the SUD activist, the net salary of a driver is around 1,900 euros (including bonuses) cannot be considered attractive.

We will nevertheless know by the end of the year if the SNCF, despite the end of the status, is still attractive and if it has succeeded in finding its 600 new agents.
