Twenty-five Caribbean flamingos and a pintail were killed by a fox at the Washington Zoo.

The wild animal managed to enter their enclosure, this institution of the American capital announced on Tuesday in a press release.

"During the morning of May 2, the bird house team discovered the deceased flamingos and saw a fox" in the outdoor bird enclosure, the Smithsonian's National Zoo reported, adding that the fox had then managed to escape.

Our team is devastated and mourning the loss of 25 American flamingos and one Northern pintail duck killed by a wild fox yesterday in the Zoo's outdoor flamingo habitat.

Rabies-carrying fox attacked passers-by in early April

Flamboyance, the name given to a flock of flamingos, originally numbered 74 Caribbean flamingos, or red flamingos.

“This is a tragic loss for us and for all who hold animals close to their hearts,” zoo director Brandie Smith said.

“The fence we were using had passed inspection and is being used by other licensed zoos across the country,” she says.

Our focus is now on the welfare of the rest of the flock and on strengthening our habitats.

The American capital had already been stirred by a vixen in early April, the animal having attacked several passers-by around the Capitol and even bitten an elected official.

The pin was euthanized and found to be a carrier of rabies, according to health authorities.
