Many residents of Västerås reacted when the activity park on Öster Mälarstrand was flooded several times last summer.

In fact, it is part of its purpose - to save surrounding houses.

- When we designed this area, it was important to include how we should handle the stormwater in the event of a downpour, says Johan Ahlström, risk engineer at the City of Västerås.

Two other places in Västerås that are pointed out as risk areas are "Röda torget" at Björnövägen and the railway viaduct at Hästhovsgatan between Haga and Gideonsberg.

Both are places where you have to work away the problems in the future.

In other respects, E18 in particular is pointed out as a risk, where the City of Västerås works together with the Swedish Transport Administration to reduce the risks of floods.

- Some parties on E18 we have had very big problems for a long time, says Johan Ahlström.

Sätra must be secured against heavy rain

An example where flood protection is already being reviewed in the first instance is the Sätra area, which is currently being built.

- There we are planning a water park and completely new solutions where, from the beginning, rainfall areas have been added that will flood over.

We have chosen materials and design based on expected more and more powerful rainfall in the future, says Johan Ahlström.

More information to follow

Information will now be produced and sent out to Västerås residents, so that private individuals can protect their properties for preventive purposes.

The city of Västerås, Mälarenergi, the rescue service and the county administrative board are working together to produce it and present it after the summer.

The idea is that you should be able to go in and see if your own house is in the risk zone for flooding.
