Djalali has been in Iranian prison since 2016, when he was arrested by the Iranian intelligence service during a conference trip to the country.

He was charged with espionage and sentenced in 2017 to death.

The 49-year-old was previously active as a researcher in disaster medicine at Karolinska Institutet.

Linked to trial in Sweden

The announcement that the execution will be carried out came just before the nine-month trial against a 60-year-old Iranian man, who is charged with a serious violation of international law, ended in Stockholm District Court.

Maja Åberg, an expert at Amnesty who has been following the case for a long time, reacts to the information coming at the same time as the trial ends in Sweden.

For TT, she describes it as "extremely remarkable" that the two men's cases are linked.

- It indicates that you see him as a kind of tile in a game, which is very worrying, she says.

One week ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that it advised against unnecessary travel to Iran.

This is after what the Ministry for Foreign Affairs calls increasingly growing "expressions of dissatisfaction", and that Iran has in various ways criticized an ongoing trial against an Iranian citizen in Sweden.

The case of Ahmadreza Djalali has aroused great interest among human rights organizations and medical associations.

The execution of his sentence has been postponed several times before.

Health problems in prison

Ahmadreza Djalali's health condition has been described as serious, with medical problems and severe weight loss.

- His health has been broken down in prison, he has both been extremely thin and suffered from a number of different health problems for which he could not be investigated or treated.

What we do know is that he underwent emergency surgery outside the prison for what appears to be a hernia.

Then he was taken back immediately without aftercare, which can make it worse, says Maja Åberg.

The Iranian-born Djalali has lived in Sweden since 2009 and has Swedish citizenship.

In Sweden there is his wife and two children.
