The last time it was vandalized was during the Walpurgis weekend when both Muslim and Christian tombstones were hit.

- We get just as appalled every time it happens, says Jörgen Lindberg who is acting cemetery manager at Östra kyrkogården, among other places.

He has never before witnessed so much vandalism in such a short time.

- Burial mounds have been kicked on, lanterns have been smashed and heavy tombstones have been overturned, he says.

Security around the clock

Now the church is putting in surveillance around the clock to stop the grave violations.

- We have a guard who patrols to prevent more burial sites from being affected.

But it is not easy in a 50-hectare cemetery, says Jörgen Lindberg.

The cemetery administration is also considering deploying camera surveillance.

- It is not an obvious decision because we do not want to intrude on those who visit their relatives here.

12 police reports

A total of 12 reports of grave vandalism have been received by the police since the beginning of April.

All reports have been dropped as the police have not been able to proceed with the case.

- But just because the police close a case does not in any way mean that this case is forgotten.

If we receive information that allows us to move forward, we are a keystroke away so we can open the investigation again, says Nils Norling who is a press spokesperson at the police in Malmö.
