The Spanish veteran Alejandro Valverde (42) will also be there on Friday in Budapest, for his second participation in the event.

Quick-Step, which revealed the composition of its group on Monday, insisted on the presence of Cavendish, co-holder of the record for stage victories in the Tour (34) since last summer and winner 15 times on the Giro between 2008 and 2013.

"Cav", which has three successes this season, should celebrate its 37th birthday during the race (May 21).

The runner from the Isle of Man will have the Dane Michael Morkov as "thrower".

Valverde, for his part, will share the responsibilities within the Movistar team with the Colombian climber Ivan Sosa, winner of the Tour of Asturias on Sunday.

During his only participation in the Giro, the Spaniard won a stage and took third place, in 2016.
