An appeal was filed with the Council of State on Wednesday April 27 against the use of the safety gallery of the Fréjus tunnel (which joins Modane in Savoie to Bardonnèche in Italy) as a traffic lane.

The approach was made by environmental associations, elected environmentalists and whistleblowers, reports France 3 Auvergne Rhône Alpes.

A path originally intended for safety

This case already dates back fifteen years, but the subject came back on the table in the face of the fear of an influx of traffic, in particular heavy goods vehicles, linked to work planned in the Mont-Blanc tunnel.

The plaintiffs, who also fear an increase in air pollution, recalled that the construction of a new gallery in the Fréjus tunnel had been decided with the aim of strengthening safety by allowing the development of new shelters rescue.

An opening planned for 2023

Thus, the opponents of this project denounce a violation of the managers' commitments but also a violation of public speech.

They also highlighted the fact that this safety gallery was financed with money from tolls, and therefore that of tunnel users.

The opening of this gallery to traffic is scheduled for the course of 2023.
