The two young men, aged 27 and 30, were crossing a pedestrian crossing on a secondary road linking Saint-Tropez to Gassin, in the Var when the accident occurred.
Despite the intervention of firefighters and the evacuation by helicopter of one of them, they could not be saved.
The driver, who fled at first, was found by the gendarmes who placed him in police custody.
