The British go to the polls this Thursday, for local elections which will be a test for the Conservative government and its Prime Minister Boris Johnson, weakened by months of scandal.

Are the conservatives still meeting?

The results of these thousands of local polls will gauge Conservative support across the country, and will be an indicator of whether or not the Labor opposition is strong.

Boris Johnson, 57, offered the Tories a historic victory in the general election in December 2019, promising to end years of political deadlock and complete Brexit, the country's exit from the European Union.

The "partygate" on everyone's lips

But since December, it has been weakened by the “partygate”, these parties organized in Downing Street during the confinements, and by a historic rise in inflation which forces the British to tighten their belts.

A police investigation into partygate found he broke the law, unheard of for a sitting prime minister, and fined him.

In January, Tory MPs, mindful of public outrage at his denials and double standards, seemed poised for a vote of no confidence.

But Russia's invasion of Ukraine, since which Johnson has given strong support to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has postponed any possible mutiny.
