We have told you that Defense Minister candidate Lee Jong-seop received more than 40 million won in consulting fees from a public institution while working at the presidential campaign last year.

However, at the same time, this candidate received 3 million won a month from a university, and it was confirmed as a result of the coverage that it violated the rules.

This is the exclusive report by Kim Tae-hoon, a reporter specializing in defense.

This is Kyungdong University in Wonju, Gangwon-do.

Candidate Jong-seop Lee for Defense Minister was hired as a fund professor in the Department of Social Welfare at the university in March 2019, after being recruited as a lieutenant general.

Funding Professors are paid a salary from a specific fund supported by the university.

This candidate received a monthly salary of 3 million won from the National Research Foundation of Korea under the Ministry of Science and ICT.

[Kyungdong University official: It is financed by the National Research Foundation of Korea.

(You usually get 3 million won (monthly).) That amount is paid.]

But last year, this candidate received 46 million won from Kyungdong University, as well as from the National Defense Science Research Institute and KAIST, which are public institutions, 2 to 3 million won per month.

It is a violation of the regulations of the National Research Foundation of Korea, which stipulates that 'If you work for a public institution or receive a remuneration exceeding 36 million won per year, the fund support will be suspended and the remaining balance will be collected'.

In response, Kyungdong University responded that they did not know that it was a contract between the foundation and the candidate.

[Kyungdong University official: We don't know how he does it.

Isn't it something you do personally?]

The National Research Foundation of Korea also replied, "We will review the fund recovery," even though "there is no way to know if the person involved is doing a frivolous work unless they voluntarily report it."

Candidate Lee Jong-seop's side explained, "I did not know the relevant regulations."
