The Head of State was traveling to the town of Loja, 264 kilometers from the Peruvian border, to chair a binational Council of Ministers.
He was supposed to fly home, but weather conditions prevented him.
The opposition had planned to launch a dismissal procedure for "
presidential vacation
" against
Pedro Castillo
if he failed to reach Peru before midnight.
The Peruvian Parliament gave the Head of State only 24 hours for his visit to Ecuador.
The latter finally reached the Tumbes post at the border, just one hour before the deadline.
If this had not been the case, it would have violated the Peruvian Constitution which states that the president cannot “
leave the national territory without the authorization of Congress or not return there within the time allowed
”.
Castillo in the face of opposition hostility and protests
Since coming to power barely nine months ago, Pedro Castillo has suffered hostility from the opposition, the majority in the Peruvian Parliament.
He has already suffered two attempts at dismissal, the last dating back to the end of March last when the country is in crisis.
Faced with the
demonstrations and strikes
that are multiplying in his country, Pedro Castillo is now up against the wall.
On April 23, he announced a referendum bill for or against a change in the Peruvian constitution.
