"
The Virginian people deserve better
."
This is the conclusion of the British parliamentary inquiry according to which the executive of the Virgin Islands, elected by the 28,000 inhabitants of the archipelago, embezzles millions of dollars of public money each year.
The British judge who conducted the investigation recommends that the British government temporarily regain power in Road Town to "
protect
" Virginians from abuses by their leaders.
This instruction does not stem from
the arrest of the Prime Minister
on Thursday.
The investigation was launched fifteen months ago, but the publication of the conclusions was precipitated by the indictment of Andrew Fahie.
Necessary legislative and constitutional changes
If the recommendation is followed, the archipelago will be ruled from London, an “
anti-democratic
” measure for Deputy Prime Minister Natalio Wheatley, who considers that it would amount, for Virginians, to no longer having representatives and leaders. elected.
British diplomacy believes that legislative and constitutional changes are necessary.
The Minister of Overseas is leaving this Saturday for the Virgin Islands to discuss the future of governance in the territory.
