The disappearance of the scalextric in the city of Madrid continues its course.

If during the past year the one of Joaquín Costa was completely dismantled, now it is the turn of the one of Pedro Bosch, which unites the districts of Retiro and Arganzuela.

Because the City Council yesterday gave the green light

to the second phase for the disappearance of the bridge

, thus completing the project that will end in the spring of 2023.

The intention that the municipal corporation now has in mind is to create a new boulevard, as also happened in the Joaquín Costa area.

This was detailed yesterday during the press conference after the Governing Board by the Works delegate, Paloma García Romero.

Specifically

, the idea is to recover the concept of the 18th century boulevard,

adapting it to the sustainable mobility practices that large European cities now implement.

This model was practically removed from the cities during the 20th century with the increase in road traffic, at which time the Scalextrics were built and are now being dismantled.

In fact, in Madrid, once these works are finished, the one that joins Cuatro Caminos with Nuevos Ministerios will be the last one standing.

In the case of Pedro Bosch, the Consistory is currently immersed in the first phase of reform, which in its entirety will affect 57,000 square meters of land, with preparation work to begin the dismantling of the current bridge.

Once security is guaranteed,

the City Council will proceed to demolish it in parts and remove it with trucks at night

.

When this first phase is completed, the boulevard will be recovered, which will have two traffic lanes in each direction, another specific one for buses and taxis, and a new bike lane.

This

will mean eliminating one of the lanes in each direction that the area currently has

, thus allowing a reduction in road traffic to adapt to sustainable mobility criteria that seek to reduce the number of vehicles that pass through the city.

In addition, the intention of the municipal corporation is to place a central space with trees and

widen the sidewalks on both sides of the road to provide more pedestrian space.

This section will affect both Doctor Esquerdo street, the area's main axis, as well as the intersections with Santa Sabina, Cavanilles, Garibay, Vaderribas, Granada, and Andalucía streets, and a section of Ciudad de Barcelona avenue that will be delimited by the Cafeto, Catalina Suárez and Caridad streets.

As the City Council Works delegate pointed out yesterday, this action is of “vital importance” to connect the Retiro and Arganzuela districts, today separated by the scalextric, as well as to unite the future Conde de Casal interchange with the Méndez Álvaro station through Pedro Bosch street.

And the project will also serve to facilitate access to the Atocha station.

In other words, it would mean

the union of the main communication nodes in the southeastern part of the city.

To carry out these works, the City Council has

a budget of 18.9 million that have already been authorized by the Governing Board

.

Just a month ago, the municipal government gave the green light to the economic bill for the first phase of dismantling the bridge, which amounted to 11.2 million.

Yesterday he did it with the second, which will mean an extra expense of 7.7 million.
