The president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez, who presented his official resignation this morning, has highlighted unity, moderation and stability as fundamental elements of his mandate in Galicia and as a recipe for the future for his work as leader of the PP in Spain.

In an institutional statement, after chairing an extraordinary meeting of the Council of the Xunta, the last before taking office, he has justified his departure by the political situation in Spain with the "frivolization" and "populism" that he sees installed in the panorama national.

Núñez Feijóo, who handed in his letter of resignation to the President of Parliament this Friday, highlighted the fact that Galicia rejected "fragmentation and emptiness" and opted for "unity and moderation" to overcome the worst moments, among which citing the latest economic crises or the pandemic.

With his resignation in writing, the process for his succession begins, which will culminate with the first vice president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, as the new head of the Galician Executive in less than two weeks.

"If you don't get excited right now, you never get excited," he added to questions from journalists about how he feels on this day.

The official letter that he has delivered ends with a handwritten part in which Núñez Feijóo says: "Thank you, thank you very much to all Galicians for giving me the honor of serving the motherland. No matter where, Galicia always", before signing .

In the letter he recalls that although the new public responsibilities that he assumes "are not incompatible" with the ownership of the regional government, he considers that the position of president of the Xunta and "holding the ordinary representation of the State in the community deserves absolute dedication".

And "from that awareness comes the decision to leave the position that I held for 13 years with the greatest dedication, responsibility and loyalty," he adds.

"I will never be able to forget the trust placed in me or return the affection I received from Galicia in these years," concludes the typed part of this letter, in which he "formally" transfers his resignation to Santalices and asks him to initiate "the appropriate procedures for the purpose of termination".

When giving his letter to Santalices, he joked that he has to deliver this letter to "one from Ourense", where the president of Parliament comes from, because "they know how to read between the lines".

Within this process, it is expected that next week the president of the Galician Chamber will call the spokespersons of the three parliamentary groups for consultations and the calendar for the investiture plenary session will be established, which is expected to be held the following week, that of the 9 of May.

As soon as his resignation is made official with the publication of his resignation in the Official State Gazette (BOE), both Núñez Feijóo and the rest of the members of the Galician Government will be in office until the new president takes office, which will elect his team of councillors.

Before going to the office of the President of Parliament, Núñez Feijóo met with deputies from the parliamentary group and his closest collaborators, after arriving at the Galician Chamber ahead of schedule and speaking informally with journalists for a few moments that awaited him.

After presenting his resignation, he will go to the Pazo de Raxoi to celebrate his last Consello de la Xunta, of a deliberative nature, before taking office, and it will be there where he will make his official farewell, with an institutional declaration without questions.

The leader of the PP made his last speech before the plenary session of the Galician Parliament this week, when he took advantage of the government control session to say goodbye.

"In these benches I was happy. I proudly carry my status as a Galician. In the same way that I served Galicia, I will continue to serve the motherland here or there," he said in the hemicycle regarding his march to Madrid.
