Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007, last Wednesday, was officially appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new government headed by Shahbaz Sharif, making the 33-year-old one of the world's youngest foreign ministers.

After he was sworn in as foreign minister, the son of former president Asif Ali Zardari and grandson of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (executed in 1979) wrote in a tweet on Twitter, "I am honored" with this position.

He added that he would work with his party (Pakistan People's Party) "to play our role in restoring democracy through electoral reforms, struggle for a fairer economy, and strengthen Pakistan's standing in the international arena."

The new foreign minister made his first trip abroad yesterday, accompanying the prime minister on a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan's main trading partner and often the financial backer of its economy.

Bilawal Bhutto was sworn in as foreign minister on Wednesday, two weeks after his contribution to the overthrow of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was ousted on April 10, following a vote of no-confidence in Parliament.

And it will fall to Bilawal Bhutto, who studied at Oxford University, the task of repairing relations with the West, after they deteriorated under Khan, who accused Washington of plotting to oust him.
