Syrian President Bashar al-Assad today issued a decree naming Ali Mahmoud Abbas Minister of Defense, four years after Ali Abdullah Ayoub took over the ministry.

The decree, which was published by the official Syrian Agency (SANA), did not explain the reason for the new appointment.

Ali Mahmoud Abbas holds the rank of major general, and is the fifth defense minister in the regime's government since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.

And descended from the village of Tal Sarim, which is one of the villages of Jableh in the coastal governorate of Lattakia

In 2016, Ali Mahmoud Abbas suffered a facial injury, after which he was transferred to the intensive care unit in a hospital.

And he led many military operations on the ground, including his attack on the Tal al-Sawwan area, in the countryside of Damascus, which resulted in the killing of about 100 members, officers and non-commissioned officers of the regime forces, which drew widespread criticism among the loyalists of the Syrian regime at the time.

The position of Minister of Defense held several names that topped the military scene in succession, and entrusted them with the responsibility of managing battles and military science in various cities and towns of Syria, which resulted in widespread destruction of infrastructure, in addition to the internal displacement of millions of Syrians and the asylum of millions of them in different countries.

On January 2, 2018, Ali Abdullah Ayoub took over the Ministry of Defense, succeeding Fahd Jassem Al-Freij, who led the ministry after the assassination of Daoud Rajha, as part of an explosion known as the Crisis Cell bombing, which targeted the National Security Building in the capital, Damascus, in July 2012

Before Rajiha, Ali Habib held the position, from 2009 until August 2011.

Five names have succeeded in the position of Defense Minister in recent years, while the former Minister, Mustafa Tlass, maintained the position of Defense Minister for 32 years during the rule of Assad the father, before he was replaced by Hassan Turkmani, who was dismissed from his position in 2009 and killed in the bombing of the National Security Building 2012
