The fire started yesterday in the dump area in northern Delhi, and soon turned it into a large burning mountain of garbage.

Garbage has been dumped at the site since 1994, writes the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times.

By now, the rubbish heap has grown to an area as large as 50 football fields, and is taller than a skyscraper of 17 floors.

Thousands of people who live and work at the rubbish dump have the arduous and dangerous task of cleaning up the still burning rubble, writes AFP.

The rubbish dump would have been closed down over ten years ago, but nothing has happened and 2,300 tonnes of rubbish is still dumped there every day.

Methane gas is formed in the rubbish heap, which is very flammable.

This in combination with an ongoing heat wave with record temperatures is believed to have given rise to the fire.

Similar landfill fires have also occurred earlier this year.
