While his party began discussions with LFI on Wednesday to find an agreement in the legislative elections, Olivier Faure wishes to recall that he is in favor of a rally but certainly not of the disappearance or humiliation of the PS.

“A coalition is not a submission”, thus explains the First Secretary of the Socialist Party in Le

Figaro

.

Olivier Faure recognizes that the PS and LFI are “Obviously different.

But we spent more time demonizing each other than really trying to understand each other, let alone get along.

For him, “the lefts are not irreconcilable”, even if “disagreements will remain.

A coalition is not a submission and each will retain its identity”.

Mélenchon "in a position to bring the left together"

Laying the foundations for the negotiation, the First Secretary also believes that for the legislative elections, “there needs to be a single candidate from the left in the hundred or so constituencies where the far right can win”.

"We must avoid confronting each other in constituencies where there are outgoing deputies who share the same desire for social and ecological justice, and then a distribution that takes into account the presidential election but also local settlements and intermediate elections", claims he.

Like former Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, Olivier Faure however considers that Jean-Luc Mélenchon, 3rd man in the presidential election with 22% of the votes, has become the central force of the left.

“You just have to open your eyes.

Lucidity is not a defect.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is now in a position to bring the left together.

He has the responsibility and even the duty.

For this reason, he justifies his remarks of Tuesday evening, where he, during a national office of the PS, invited the opponents of an agreement with LFI to "leave".

"If some consider today that their space is no longer the left but an elsewhere that is found among the Walkers, then they take their responsibility".

A tackle against Hidalgo

Asked moreover about ex-president François Hollande, Olivier Faure is ironic about “all the former elephants” of the PS who “are out.

Not always to help the left win”.

As for Anne Hidalgo, who called some of her relatives to denounce the desire to agree with Jean-Luc Mélenchon, he judges that she “led a campaign as she wished, with courage.

I intend to lead the legislative campaign with determination”.

But he tackles the candidate: “If we are there, it is not unrelated to the result of the presidential election.

But the time is not for states of mind, rather for states of service”.

The atmosphere at the PS is therefore not heading, for the moment, towards appeasement.
