The Danish Minister of Justice, Nick Hækkerup (S), has signed an agreement with Kosovo's Minister of Justice Albulena Haxhiu that Denmark will have the opportunity to rent 300 places in the prison in the city of Gjilan in southeastern Kosovo.

Convicted criminals who are to be deported from Denmark can thus serve their sentences in prison in Kosovo instead of on Danish soil.

Hækkerup describes the agreement, which has not yet been approved by the Folketing and the parliament in Kosovo, as "groundbreaking".

- I think it is excellent that we can get them out as soon as possible, he says.

Forssell (M): Lack of places

The Moderates' Johan Forsell wants Sweden to now investigate the possibilities of doing the same thing.

- Both because there is a shortage of places in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, they cost a lot, and then we have big problems with getting people who have been sentenced to deportation to also leave the country, he says to TV4.

Forssell believes that the issue should be investigated properly but sees no major obstacles to establishing a similar agreement as Denmark.

- If it can be implemented in Denmark, why should it not work with us in Sweden.
