They were perhaps the last cubic meters of Russian gas.

But for the Poles, it was still only a matter of time before they would turn off the tap themselves.

The country has used the spring to replenish its stocks and find new suppliers who can replace a loss of around half of all gas that the country disposes of.

A new gas pipeline to Norway will be opened before the turn of the year, at the same time as increasingly liquefied natural gas from the USA will be unloaded in Swinoujscie's port.

Helps Germany

Poland realized much earlier than neighboring Germany what a risky dependence on Russian gas it was in. While the German government had a new Russian-German gas pipeline built in the Baltic Sea, Poland began to build itself together with Norwegian gas fields - while resenting the naive the Germans.

Now Poland can instead help Germany reduce its energy dependence on Russia.

Not when it comes to gas - because Germany is not ready there yet.

But thanks to Poland, Germany can turn off Russian oil.

Germany says it can stop buying Russian oil in just a few days - that is, close the oil pipes from Russia.

Through a deal with Poland, crude oil for refineries in eastern Germany can instead begin to be unloaded in the Polish port city of Danzig.

This is good news for the Polish government, which has stubbornly tried to push through an EU embargo on Russian oil, under strong opposition from Germany.

So instead of a wedge, a bridge between them has actually been built.

EU countries stand firm

Also in Bulgaria, the Russian gas pipes are restricted from today.

The country is even more dependent on Russian gas than Poland, and has not been able to store as much.

But despite the difficult situation, the Russian wedge has not gained a foothold here either.

Because Bulgaria had also planned to shut down Russian gas at the turn of the year, and has already started importing from Azerbaijan.

Immediately, EU neighbor Greece today extended its hand and promised to help Bulgaria with gas.

Russia's gas may be the cheapest on the EU market.

But the real value of it has fallen today after the written gas contracts proved to be worthless.

And so far, it seems that the EU countries together have stood the test of time for the Russian stress test.
