The government factions of the traffic light coalition and the Union as the largest opposition faction want to pass a joint motion in the Bundestag this Thursday to support Ukraine with heavy weapons.

According to media reports, both sides have agreed on this.

A corresponding compromise was also confirmed by the traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP.

The Union faction wants to join the application submitted by the traffic light and withdraw its own - more extensive - application after changes to the paper of the traffic light have been achieved.

The Union faction leadership had previously mentioned decoupling from the planned 100 billion euro special fund for the Bundeswehr as a condition for their approval of a joint application.

According to information from Union circles, the planned special fund should now be mentioned neutrally.

Steinmeier welcomes delivery of heavy weapons

The joint version of the application now says that the Bundestag is calling on the federal government to “implement the draft law to set up a “Bundeswehr special fund” to strengthen alliance and defense capabilities and the associated investments as quickly as possible”.

According to this information, the words "in the sense of the decision of the Federal Cabinet" would be removed from the traffic light draft, since the Union does not agree with the previous wording of the cabinet decision.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has meanwhile backed the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

Steinmeier said during a visit to Slovakia: "I'm not one of those who accuses the federal government of weighing the opportunities and risks of decisions that can have major consequences, and if that leads to the result that weapons of certain categories are delivered then I will support it.” Germany does not need “to hide behind others with its financial, humanitarian and military achievements.
