British society is shocked when it was revealed that a high-ranking British official recommended a drink mixed with abortion pills to a pregnant woman in order to keep his wife from having an affair.

According to media such as The Guardian on the 26th local time, it was reported that Darren Burke, 43, a British Interior Ministry official, was charged with attempting a miscarriage by using orange juice that a pregnant woman could eat.

Burke, who had been in an affair with the woman since 2020, found out that the woman was pregnant in November of the same year.

But Burke, who already had his wife and children, was concerned that his affair would come out, and he discouraged the woman from giving birth, sending the woman a site where she could take an abortion pill and looking for a hospital.

However, she said the woman would have a child, and in December of the same year they met at the woman's home.

Burke offered the woman a drink and a drink one after another, but she refused, saying, "She has severe morning sickness and won't drink it."

After Burke left the woman's home, the woman discovered white powder on the rim of the cup containing her drink, which was suspicious and called the police.

Police investigations revealed that the powder was a drug that caused an abortion in early pregnancy.

Burke, before appearing in court, admitted that he had purchased the drug "through an online site," but denied it was intended to cause a miscarriage.

His lawyer argued that "Burke was not 'forced' when he told a woman to drink a drink, it was an act to 'take care of' the woman."

In court, the woman described his appearance at the time: "He seemed very embarrassed when he brought him a drink."

The trial is ongoing and Burke has been suspended.

Meanwhile, the woman miscarried her child on Christmas Day 2020, three weeks after the incident, for reasons unrelated to the incident.

This is a 'news pick'.
