- We have to do it this way, says Jan Lundin who is head of negotiations at Region Skåne.

As before, regionally employed midwives are compensated if they take extra care during the summer.

But early in the year, the region decided that external midwives should receive an equivalent hourly wage, which this year is SEK 830, if they jump in.

- We have tried to make the extra sessions attractive based on our needs, says Jan Lundin.

Jan Lundin does not want to comment on how obvious the staff shortage is before the summer, but SVT Nyheter Skåne has previously reported that about 20 midwives have resigned in Malmö due to work environment problems.

Due to the staff shortage, five maternity wards are currently closed at Sus in Malmö.

"An exceptional measure"

Jan Lundin can not remember a year when he was offered an hourly wage at this level.

- This is an exceptional measure that we try to be restrictive with because we safeguard the rest and recovery of our employees.

It is a real effort to work in addition to your regular working hours.

What do you do if this is not enough to cover the staff shortage?

- We have an action plan.

But I am not the right person to answer that question, says Jan Lundin.
