Europe breathes a sigh of relief.
The President of the Council of the EU, the Belgian Charles Michel, has been one of the first to celebrate the victory of
Emmanuel Macron
in the second round of the presidential elections in France, against the candidate of the extreme right, Marine Le Pen, and has highlighted that the "EU needs strong French support".
For her part, the president of the Commission
, Ursula von der Leyen
, congratulated Macron on his re-election.
"I am glad that we can continue our excellent cooperation. Together, we will move France and Europe forward," she wrote in French in a Twitter message.
The European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, has congratulated Macron on his re-election via Twitter, noting that "France has chosen Europe".
Macron's victory means the triumph of one of his main defenders and one of his economic engines, along with Germany.
The Finance Minister of this country, Christian Lindner, has stressed that Macron's election makes "united Europe the biggest winner of these elections."
French President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected by obtaining 57% of the vote, according to initial estimates, compared to 43% obtained by Le Pen.
